T-Mobile And AT&T 4G War Is Never Dull

3d character eating popcornSit back, grab the popcorn and prepare to be entertained. I am a T-Mobile customer and I waited to hear from others before upgrading to the MyTouch 4G in the event this new phone was not as good as the marketing made it out to be.

I must say that so far this phone has exceeded my expectations and the only negative thing that I have to say is about the preinstalled software it comes with, I personally do not like my electronics jammed packed with applications that I do not like. Now there may be a way to uninstall this software and I just have not found the answer. If you know how to uninstall some or all of this software please leave a comment detailing the steps. I know T-Mobile is working to expand their 4G coverage and unfortunately it is not in the area where I reside, however the lack of 4G in my local area is not enough to taint my opinion of this phone. It is fast and feels extremely comfortable in my hand. Just take a look at what others have said:

It is the top android phone now and it is the fastest processor wise, and has hspa + high speed internet at NO EXTRA CHARGE….yes it blows my iPhone 4 away…..

I just got 5+ mbps on speedtest over my phone, and I’m on hsdpa, not hspa+….

I love how my phone has no lag whatsoever. Just pure speed here….

It seems that T-Mobile and AT&T are having some friendly back and forth words over on their Facebook pages that you may want to check out. In fact T-Mobile has a a page entirely dedicated to fans showing off the 4G speeds out in the real world. Now I must say that I love the fact that T-Mobile has taken a play from the Mac vs PC marketing and I find it amusing that the iPhone is the bread and butter of AT&T wireless and Android has become a strong competitor.

So what do you think, is AT&T beginning to show fear in the face of the MyTouch 4G device? My last question is to those of you that are die hard iPhone fans. Have you looked at MyTouch 4G firsthand? Would you consider the switch and if so why?

T-Mobile USA iPhone Rumors

As a long time consumer of T-Mobile I can say without any doubt that I for one do not care what so ever if the iPhone makes it way into T-Mobile. I just will never purchase the iPhone myself however I do understand that other T-Mobile customers want this phone but ane not willing to move to AT&T. I firmly believe that the iPhone’s days are numbered and from the poll I conducted it seems many of you agree. I asked is the iPhone losing market share and 67% said yes.

So here we go with another rumor pertaining to the iPhone , T-Mobile and our hopes and dreams for its arrival. Whatever you think about the iPhone, its appearance on the magenta network would certainly give a boost to a fourth place T-Mobile. Deutsche Telekom CEO Rene Obermann hinted in an interview today that the T-Mobile USA branch is indeed hoping to land a deal for the iPhone.

Rooted MyTouch 3G Running Super D v1.2

If you are operating a rooted MyTouch 3G then you do not want to miss this ROM. If you have not rooted your MyTouch then what are you waiting for? See my previous post titled How To Root A MyTouch 3G.

As you may have gathered I have tried a number of ROMS since I originally rooted my phone and each has its pros and cons. I must say that I have not been happy at all with the Hero ROMS as they seem to slow and the Eclair ROMS I have tried have a number of bugs including the camera does not work which was a show stopper for me.

There are a number of reasons for rooting your Android based phone and the key points that was important to me are:

  1. Performance boost
  2. Tethering
  3. Bonus apps and widgets
  4. Better keyboard

I am extremely happy with Super D v1.2 and after a few days now I can honestly say I have not encountered any bugs. I did have to download the tethering application and install it manually as it was not included with this ROM and I am not sure why. I am also a bit picky about the keyboard and I elected to install the HTC Hero type keyboard.

if you prefer the keyboard on the HTC Hero then grab this apk and install it. Here are the instructions for the installation as well as how to enable the keyboard:

  1. Mount your phone to your pc, and move the HTC_IME.apk to your sd card.
  2. Fire up your favorite file manager. Browser to where you copied the apk.  From here you can install the .apk file.
  3. Go to your home > Settings > Locale & text. Select “Touch Input”.
  4. Go to someplace where you input text, such as messaging. Long-press on the text input field, and select “Input Method”. Select ‘Touch Input.
  5. When you go to enter text, the HTC keyboard should now be in use. You can click the little gear on the keyboard to change the keyboard settings, and toggle between qwerty/t9/compact qwerty.

Once you have finished the installation and configuration your keyboard should not look like the image to the left. Good luck in your endeavors with rooting your phone.

Should you have any tips, tricks, ROMS, or anything at all to share please leave a comment.

How To Root A MyTouch 3G

Today I decided to root the MyTouch 3G and thanks to theunlockr.com the process was quick and painless, reference How To: Root a Donut Phone (Android 1.6). I have made a local PDF copy however you should always check theunlockr for news and updates.

I must admit that I really wanted to run a Hero ROM and while I was successful in this endeavor the problem was not the rooting process but the ROM was so slow that I found the found unusable. This leads me into the question what have others in the community found when it comes to a Hero ROM? Is there a specific ROM that you have found that works well? I have ended up with the Original Donut 1.6 w/ Root (Magic, MyTouch, 32B) ROM for the time being. It is also worth mentioning that this ROM provides both wired and wireless tethering but I have yet to test this capability. Below are a handful of (32B) ROMS that I aware of:

  1. Amon Ra’s Clean Donut (MyTouch, Magic 32B)
  2. Dwang Android 1.6 (MyTouch, 32B)
  3. MotoBlur ROM (MyTouch, 32B)
  4. QTek Hero ROM (Magic, MyTouch, 32B)
  5. ZeroXd Hero ROM (Magic, MyTouch, 32B)
  6. JACHeroSki Hero ROM (Magic, MyTouch, 32B)
  7. Maxisma Hero ROM (MyTouch, 32B Magic)
  8. Original Donut 1.6 w/ Root (Magic, MyTouch, 32B)

So what are you waiting for? Root your MyTouch today! Also please leave a comment on your thoughts when it comes to the various ROMS and feel free to add any I may not have covered.

myTouch Applications: Round One

Android  was built from the ground-up to enable developers to create compelling mobile applications that take full advantage of all a handset has to offer. It was built to be truly open. For example, an application can call upon any of the phone’s core functionality such as making calls, sending text messages, or using the camera, allowing developers to create richer and more cohesive experiences for users. Android is built on the open Linux Kernel. Furthermore, it utilizes a custom virtual machine that was designed to optimize memory and hardware resources in a mobile environment. Android is open source; it can be liberally extended to incorporate new cutting edge technologies as they emerge. The platform will continue to evolve as the developer community works together to build innovative mobile applications.

Application List

The T-Mobile “My Account” app for the myTouch is a billing and account management application that shows you information about your current bill, data usage amounts, memory remaining, as well as battery status. It’s a great app to get installed on your myTouch as soon as possible so that you can relax and manage your billing and other hassles right from within your T-Mobile myTouch.

T-Movile MyAccount

SherpaSherpa is an advanced location-aware recommendation engine with a powerful “passive personalization” feature that silently learns your preferences as you use your T-Mobile myTouch 3G. This myTouch app works in the background and starts learning about your favorite theater, bank, and other locations that you frequent. You can also use it to find businesses and restaurants close to your current location and filter by categories or distance. If you like a specific cafe or restaurant, you can tap a little thumbs-up icon on the app and it’ll offer other recommendations similar to the one you just liked.

TwidroidThe Twidroid myTouch app is an excellent Twitter application that is both feature-packed and easy-to-use. You can customize most aspects of the app, including how many new tweets you want to see when the app launches. The app is quite responsive and quick even with the settings maxed out (show maximum tweets, and refresh rate set at max). You can insert pictures and your current location when you create a new tweet. Photos can be uploaded to Twitpic and other services seamlessly.

Visual Voice MailVisual Voicemail is free to all Android users regardless of the handset. The application gives users complete control of their voicemail without making a single call which believe it or not is a godsend. All you have to do is call in and request a (Free) visual voicemail addition to your data plan. The steps needed to get all setup are as follows:

For those unfamiliar with visual voicemail it basically gives you what you would imagine, a visual representation of voicemail with better control. You can view date and time information as well as information about the caller and length of the voicemail. A very simple interface makes this application very user-friendly and after using it for a few days you’ll wonder why every phone does not currently have this option.

What is your favorite myTouch application?
