The Shortcut Guide to Business Security Measures Using SSL

This guide examines current information security threats to business and describes techniques for developing a security management strategy that leverages established best practices. Designed for IT professionals and business managers, this guide provides an overview of security threats, their impact on businesses, and, perhaps most importantly, practices and technologies for controlling security risks. The first chapter begins with a discussion of cybercrime and the business resources targeted by increasingly sophisticated and organized attackers. The second chapter moves to examine how common weaknesses in business processes, such as insufficient use of SSL, leave organizations vulnerable to data breaches and compromised systems. The final two chapters address how to create a high impact security strategy and implement best practices, including multiple uses of SSL technologies, to protect your business.

Review

I have been waiting for this phone for some time now and once it hit T-Mobile I immediately picked up one. I must say that the first week of using this phone it is everything that I anticipated and then some.

The battery life has been amazing thus far but I must say that I am not the type of person who loads up my screens with widgets, I personally tend to keep my screens organized and clutter free.

It is a large phone and I was also extremely surprised just how lite the it is. I suppose the only complaint I have, which even goes back to the MyTouch 4G is the bloat-ware. I’m fine with providers providing applications out of the box but is it to much to ask for when it comes to allowing the consumer to uninstall apps they do not use?

I think not! It is also important to note that while Android voice commands is core to the operating system, Samsung’s voice is also very slick, check out this video:

Android voice commands are extremely powerful, easy to use, and have been available for some time. It seems that the newest sensation to hit the Apple iPhone is Siri. While I do not personally own an iPhone, it does beg the question what took Apple so long to come out with this technology. I have been in the camp of an Android fan for years now and I have been heavily using the voice commands for some time now. For those who have not been using this feature of your Android phone stop for a moment and ask yourself why. By far the largest use I see is when I am driving. Being able to speak my commands via a blue tooth headset keep my hands free and allows me to communicate with those tasks that simply cannot wait. Is there differences between Siri and Voice Commands? Sure there are but back to my point Android has had this functionality for over a year.

Commands

send text to [contact] [message]

listen to [artist/song/album]

call [business]

call [contact]

send email to [contact] [message]

go to [website]

note to self [note]

navigate to [location/business name]

directions to [location/business name]

map of [location]

define [say a word]

Conclusion

Folks, don’t let the iPhone fanatics tell you that Siri can now allow them to communicate in a way they you cannot. The truth is Android’s voice commands are very powerful and get the job very nicely. It will be interesting to see what feature enhancements Google will push out in this highly competitive market.

There is no denying that the mobile platform has become a billion dollar industry in recent years. As with traditional computing needs is the subject of protecting, both consumers and the service which a mobile platform intends to provide.

Software Development and Security

The process of developing software is termed the Software Development Lifecycle (SDL), which entails a variety of patterns and practices. To address security one could take a page out of the Microsoft playbook and adopt the Security Development Lifecycle (SDLC). Modern day mobile devices interact via the internet and understanding this architecture is the first step. Software architecture has undergone tremendous change since the mid 1990’s (Britto, Kumar, & Rabara, 2010). Because of the risk associated with HTTP protocols, it is imperative to consider the use of encryption for example to protect transitions that occur. If security is not addressed early in the design stages then the result will be a variety of vulnerabilities that could have been accounted for during development. Secure development encapsulates that team that makes up the project. To bake in security there must be an established baseline that covers controls and activities and without these steps, the result will be a product that is at substantial risk (Dawson, Burrell, Rahim, & Brewster, 2010). If you begin to define and break down the baseline into process stages the result will be identifiable actions that must occur at every stage of the development lifecycle. These actions in turn provide clear and obtainable security countermeasures that will address known security holes. It is equally important for the process not to become stalled, in other words it must adapt to the technology and the vast number of risk that follow.

Smartphone Key Security Practices

The end consumers of the mobile platform also share in the responsibility when it comes to security. Smartphones had become the standards means of communication in terms of banking, email, and commercial purchases. Because consumers share in the responsibility there are 12 steps one can take to better protect themselves (Mediati, 2011), for example:

Use of Virtual Credit Cards

Keep Software Updated

Use of Antivirus Software

There is a great deal of trust placed at the doorstep of applications and consumers must only download and install applications that are from trusted sources (Wawro, 2011). This is even truer in the sense of a business. Smartphones today are essentially a computer that fits into the palm of a hand. The technologies employed include audio, camera, and video, which open the door to proven methods of education (Khaddage, Chonka, Zhou, 2009).

Today Sony Crackle for the Apple iPad and so far I am impressed. This free app puts hundreds of movies from Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Classics, and Tri-Star libraries, as well as hundreds of TV shows owned by Sony all for free with of course advertisements. Don’t let the ads turn you off. They are small and unobtrusive and in my opinion well worth the delays for watching free content. You may recall a previous post titled Are Traditional Cable Providers Becoming Extinct and with the release of Crackle this is just another step in the direction when those coaxial cables are just begging to be cut. If you’re interesting in cutting the cord and saving your money then be sure to read Fire Your Cable Provider And Save Your Money With Playon.

The interface on the iPad is exactly what one would expect. It is crisp and clean and extremely easy to navigate. Take a look for yourself.

There is a fairly good range on content available to include The DaVinci Code, Big Daddy, and Quarantine just to name a few of big ticket Hollywood movies. As a child I grew up watching television shows like Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and of course Charlie’s Angels. Now all of with you can turn back the clock for yourself and watch these classic shows should you have never been so lucky.

You can download the app from iTunes and it’s free.

Just the other day I was visiting Best Buy to pick up a Wii game for my daughter when a gentleman from Direct TV approach me about their service. Little did the salesman know that I walked away from traditional cable providers well over six months ago and I have never turned back. Anyhow I let the sales rep throw out his sales pitch and once he finished I asked a very simple question. I asked him why should I pay Direct TV any amount of money for a service that I can easily locate for free or even for a small fee from streaming media providers. The look on his face initially was one of confusion. A few seconds later he began pitching the sports packages and I quickly pointed out that my Apple TV has me covered when it comes to Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association. Next he began talking about the wide variety of movies and I quickly pointed out that NetFlix has me covered, not to mention the movie database over at YouTube. From this point I even explained that as a PlayOn consumer I can stream media across devices in my home as well as my mobile devices. At this point the representative gave up and said should I ever change my mind that I should reconsider Direct TV. I can honestly say that will never happen!

Stop for a moment and think about how much you’re paying that traditional cable provider. The average consumer pays close to $75 a month and others may pay $100 or more depending upon all the additional programming choices. Is it really worth $900 to $1,200 annually to watch that ball game or your favorite reality television show? Have you ever considered alternatives? Do you know what these alternatives are? More importantly what can you get at will it cost you the $75 – $100 a month? You may be surprised at the answer.

Hardware and Software

PlayOn

PlayOn makes it easy for you to watch your favorite videos, shows, and movies from websites such as Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and more on your TV using your Wii, Xbox 360, or Playstation 3 over your home internet connection. PlayOn also works on your iPhone or Android phone.

There are three different license options and they range from $4.99 a month, $39.99 annually, to a one-time fee of $79.99 which is the option I selected. You can even kick the tires with a free 14 day trial to see if it works in your situation.

Out of the box you have access to Hulu, NetFlix, CBS, spike, and many more. This just to start and with plugins you can pull in a variety of content from many other party site to include:

Channel 9

Crackle

Discovery Channel

Food Network

HGTV

South Park Studios

I have PlayOn installed on both my Android device and iPad for mobile viewing.

AndroXplorer is an essential application for everyone who owns an Android device. Its natural process is the way for Android users to explore folders and files proficiently. While there are numerous file explorers on the market today each falls short in its own way when it comes to measuring up to AndroXplorer.

The fine folks at the AndroXplorer has graciously provided five FREE licenses of AndroXplorer v3, just continue reading for details on how to win.

Editions

There are two versions available and depending upon your needs they provide two very different feature sets.

Version 2 is the free light version which does not support data encryption or compression and compared to version 3. That being said if you have no need for these then you would be just fine running version 2. However, it is well worth stating the obvious and as mobile devices are becoming more and more part of our daily lives the ability to encrypt your data becomes much more important.

Features

Protect your sensitive data on Android phone by activating the app. with “state-of-the-art” technology of encryption.

To manage your installed applications, AndroXplorer provides My Programs. This feature aggregates all installed applications within a single folder. Tap on an application within the folder to activate, to see the properties or to get more information from the market. Options also available to uninstall and performing backup where it is applicable.

Another key feature of AndroXplorer is the sliding drawers for file sorting, navigation and toolbar. File sorting has never been easier with this approach. Pull down the pertinent drawer for sorting, tap on the sort type to sort, tap again for ascending or descending sorting. These uniquely designed sliding drawers also provide fast navigation within a view, making it a very smooth flow of operation from folder to folder and subsequently performing file operations easily within the destination folder.

Shortcuts feature in AndroXplorer is very convenient to use, it enables you to create shortcuts to files and folders from any folder within a view. The shortcuts are then saved in a folder for future references.

Selectable color theme.

AndroXplorer supports advanced multiple-views file browsing. View-to-view navigation is as easy as swiping left or right. Each view has a self-contained folder with full file manager functions.

Review

I must admit that I was surprised just how easy it was to use this application once I took the time to configure it to my needs. I’m probably the worst person when it comes to reading instructions and upon stumbling my way around I turned to the instruction material on the AndroXplorer web site and it no time I was creating my key files.

The interface is very intuitive and with the slide features makes accessing features a snap.

Ask yourself the following question. How often do you search for a file whether it is a PDF document, image, or even your favorite music track? The search feature within AndroXplorer is second to none and with the addition of regular expressions your search will never be the same again. In fact you will very quickly find that you have located what you’re looking for.

The most notable feature in my opinion is around security.

I enjoy that I am able to create a key file that I can securely house my user names and passwords to web sites that I may need to access while I am away from my primary computer.

Many of us use or mobile devices for so many reasons which may include work and personal reasons. Have you ever stopped for a moment to consider that the document your about to attach to an email really could pose a number of problems should it fall into the wrong hands?

You can quickly and easily encrypt and password protect files and then confidentially fire up your email and send it off. Should it then fall into the wrong hands then you have nothing to fear.

Summary

While there are other good file explorers out there none can close to matching the robust features and the sense of security that AndroXplorer brings to the table. While this application is a much more expensive than every other application I have ever purchased as an Android device owner it is well worth the cost for the peace of mind.

Bottom line is try out version 2 for yourself in order to experience the interface for yourself and should you also wish to address the security vulnerability that is starring you in the face then by all means purchase version 3 today!

Rating: 4 out of 5

Name: AndroXplorer

MSRP: $15.00 for v3 and Free for v2

A new poll conducted by Intel reveals that our mobile manners are decreasing. This isn’t shocking. However, there are a few stats that are shocking. This poll surveyed 2,000 people. Of the 2,000 people surveyed, 91% of them stated that they believed our “mobile manners” are decreasing year after year. When asked if they had poor mobile manners, only 20% of them replied yes.

Upon ready the survey I must say that I was not surprised to see the results. I’m not saying that I condone the use rather that I see such poor manners each and every day.

Let me ask you this. Have you ever walked into your local grocery store, favorite restaurant, or stopped to get gas only to have someone standing in front of you with a cell phone glued to their ear? I’m sure you have and you most likely you was in a hurry only to realize the idiot on the phone has no care in the world except for the conversation happening in their own little world. Here is an idea, the next technology breakthrough should come in the form a killing cell phone signals as soon as you enter a business establishment

Do you fall into the 91% of folks that bring other to the edge of rage? What annoying mobile habits of people do you see that bother you? If you have a story that just drive you nuts, leave a comment and share the horror with others.

Sit back, grab the popcorn and prepare to be entertained. I am a T-Mobile customer and I waited to hear from others before upgrading to the MyTouch 4G in the event this new phone was not as good as the marketing made it out to be.

I must say that so far this phone has exceeded my expectations and the only negative thing that I have to say is about the preinstalled software it comes with, I personally do not like my electronics jammed packed with applications that I do not like. Now there may be a way to uninstall this software and I just have not found the answer. If you know how to uninstall some or all of this software please leave a comment detailing the steps. I know T-Mobile is working to expand their 4G coverage and unfortunately it is not in the area where I reside, however the lack of 4G in my local area is not enough to taint my opinion of this phone. It is fast and feels extremely comfortable in my hand. Just take a look at what others have said:

It is the top android phone now and it is the fastest processor wise, and has hspa + high speed internet at NO EXTRA CHARGE….yes it blows my iPhone 4 away…..

I just got 5+ mbps on speedtest over my phone, and I’m on hsdpa, not hspa+….

I love how my phone has no lag whatsoever. Just pure speed here….

It seems that T-Mobile and AT&T are having some friendly back and forth words over on their Facebook pages that you may want to check out. In fact T-Mobile has a a page entirely dedicated to fans showing off the 4G speeds out in the real world. Now I must say that I love the fact that T-Mobile has taken a play from the Mac vs PC marketing and I find it amusing that the iPhone is the bread and butter of AT&T wireless and Android has become a strong competitor.

T-Mobile MyTouch 4G “No Shirt”

So what do you think, is AT&T beginning to show fear in the face of the MyTouch 4G device?
